Pics of Southern steam engine 630 in Athens, TN

Description

Attached are a couple of shots of Southern 2-8-0 630 on a oneway fan trip from Knoxville to Chattanooga today.  Patrons paid a round trip fare and were bussed back to Knoxville after their arrival in Chattanooga.  The 630 is owned by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum as are the passenger cars used on the trip.      The 630 was built in 1903 by the American Locomotive Works (commonly known as Alco).  This was the first long distance trip by the 630 after being refurbished at the TVRM in Chattanooga.  It ran a short 60 mile trip from Chattanooga to Cleveland and back as a test run in July of this year.     The 630 had a wheel arrangement of 2-8-0 and was commonly known as a Consolidation.  The second tender in the pics is an auxiliary water tender which allows the engine to run for a longer period of time before stopping for water.     The Norfolk Southern has graciously allowed the 630 to operate over their rails and more steam fan trips have been scheduled.                                                                                       Jay (423-1207) "Some days you tame the tiger.
